Candlewood Suites

Candlewood Suites - Lodi

The Candlewood Suites Lodi was designed as a smart, efficient, and welcoming extended-stay hotel that speaks to both the traveler’s needs and the regional context of Lodi’s wine country charm. From an architectural perspective, the project balances functionality with clean, contemporary lines, offering a straightforward yet refined visual identity. The three-story structure was planned with a warm, neutral material palette and subtle detailing to reflect the surrounding landscape, creating a comfortable and professional presence that complements the city’s evolving hospitality scene.

Interior spaces were thoughtfully laid out to prioritize long-term guest comfort, with generous suite layouts, in-room kitchens, and a host of amenities tailored to business and leisure travelers alike. The public areas—such as the Candlewood Cupboard, fitness center, and communal workspace—were integrated into the floor plan to enhance flow and ease of use, while still allowing for natural light and openness throughout. Every square foot was designed with purpose, aligning with IHG’s standards while tailoring the experience to the Lodi market.

The site design also emphasized accessibility, safety, and ease of circulation, with ample parking, defined pedestrian paths, and smart landscaping that required minimal maintenance. While the architectural expression remains grounded in practicality, it is elevated by careful material selection, cohesive detailing, and a clear understanding of what extended-stay travelers value most. The Candlewood Suites Lodi was crafted to provide not just a place to stay, but a place to settle in—a home base that blends comfort, efficiency, and quiet style.

Home 2 by Hilton

HOME 2 BY HILTON - SUNNYVALE

The planned Home2 Suites by Hilton in Sunnyvale was envisioned as a fresh, contemporary addition to the extended-stay hotel landscape, balancing functionality with thoughtful, site-sensitive design. From the outset, the design team approached the project with an emphasis on blending Hilton’s modern brand identity with the unique qualities of the site. The six-story, 131-room structure was carefully massed to respond to the scale of the surrounding area while maintaining a strong street presence and visual cohesion with the natural landscape.

Architecturally, the building featured generous glazing to enhance natural light within guest suites and common areas, supporting the brand’s commitment to wellness and comfort. A planned rooftop garden was a signature design element, offering guests a relaxing, green retreat with elevated views—an amenity that also helped reduce heat island effect and promote sustainability. The material palette emphasized clean lines, durable finishes, and warm tones, aligning with the Hilton Home2 aesthetic while elevating it with regionally inspired touches.

One of the most distinctive features of the design was the integration of the site’s mature redwood trees. Rather than remove them, the concept preserved these natural assets and wove a meandering walking path throughout, creating a serene, park-like experience for guests. Although the project did not proceed beyond the planning stage, it stands as an example of how thoughtful architecture can celebrate both brand and place—merging hospitality, landscape, and modern design into a cohesive vision for extended-stay travel.

La Quinta Inn & Suites

La Quinta Inn & suites - San Jose

Replacing the long-standing Charles Motel, the new La Quinta Inn & Suites San Jose marks a bold transformation of a generational property into a sleek, modern hospitality destination. From an architectural standpoint, this project was more than just new construction—it was a reinvention rooted in respect for the site’s legacy. The original motel, once a family-run business serving travelers for decades, had reached the end of its life. Rather than a simple retrofit, the decision was made to clear the site and begin anew, giving rise to a purpose-built hotel that meets the expectations of today’s guests while honoring the memory of what once stood there.

The architectural design focused on creating a contemporary, clean-lined structure that stands confidently within the evolving urban fabric of San Jose. The new hotel’s massing is carefully articulated to provide both presence and approachability, with a warm yet modern material palette and dynamic facade treatments that break down the building’s scale. Guest rooms are thoughtfully laid out for comfort and efficiency, while public spaces like the open-plan lobby, breakfast area, and fitness center are positioned to maximize light, flow, and guest interaction. High-quality finishes, energy-efficient systems, and subtle nods to regional character create an experience that is both polished and personal.

From site planning to interior detailing, the project exemplifies how modern hospitality design can elevate a once-familiar corner of the city into something fresh, vibrant, and inviting. While the Charles Motel is now part of the property’s history, its spirit continues in the new building’s commitment to comfort, service, and a sense of place. This was a rare opportunity to preserve memory while forging something entirely new—and for the design team, a meaningful exercise in balancing legacy with progress.

Ramada Inn

Ramada Inn - Modesto

The Ramada by Wyndham Modesto Yosemite Area underwent a dramatic $4.5 million transformation, turning what was once a run-down, boarded-up facility plagued by vagrants and high crime into a revitalized and welcoming hospitality destination. The property had long stood as a symbol of blight along the McHenry Avenue corridor—vacant, deteriorating, and a source of concern for the surrounding neighborhood. The design team saw not just a challenge, but a chance to reimagine a space with strong bones and a valuable location, bringing new purpose and dignity to a site that had lost both.

Architecturally, the approach was comprehensive. Every aspect of the existing structure was reassessed and enhanced, beginning with a complete reconfiguration of the lobby into a light-filled, contemporary welcome center. Guest rooms were stripped down and rebuilt with durable, stylish materials, energy-efficient systems, and thoughtful layouts to ensure both comfort and practicality. Common areas and meeting spaces were reimagined to offer flexibility, flow, and visual cohesion, using modern palettes and finishes that speak to Wyndham’s current design language while maintaining budget-conscious sensibility.

The building’s exterior received just as much care, with a full facade renovation that introduced modern forms, bold signage, and landscaping that transformed the site from an eyesore to an asset. Security upgrades, site lighting, and visibility enhancements were key to re-establishing safety and guest confidence. For the design team, this project wasn’t just about renovation—it was a true restoration of both structure and spirit, offering a renewed gateway to Modesto and a compelling example of how design can reclaim and redefine neglected urban spaces.
